Batwoman Episode 1 Review

Batwoman stars Ruby Rose as Kate Kane (Batwoman). The show starts 3 years after Batman disappeared. When Batman disappeared Kate Kanes father started basically a security firm to help secure Gotham’s Elite. Kate Kane has been out of town and reappears when she received news a past lover was kidnapped. When she comes back her and her father are not on the best of terms.

The show itself starts out as a typical Superhero tv show but Batwoman has a traumatic background that if
they deep dive it would be a very interesting plot. In the first episode they just gave a small over look of what happened and kind of just made it seem like not a big deal which was kind of disappointing considering the future seems to be planned off of this terrible tragedy that took place. In my opinion it needs to step up its game for it to be a succesful tv show, they need a deeper backstory which hopefully will be developed over the next few shows. As far as villains ‘Alice’, Batwomans first nemesis is tied to this tragedy and has a great chance to be the best DC tv show villain yet if they can execute but that would include once again a deeper background and understanding of what happened as much as it would the effect that it had on everyone. The show would be even better and if they made it dark it would give it something different from every other superhero show.

Overall I expected more and will hopefully get more going forward with the season, I expected better considering they got Ruby Rose to play their main character. I was honestly expecting a darker show considering the story and the actress. The show wasn’t terrible but I expected more.
It’s only the first episode so they have time to get it together but they need to do it quick. I mean it’s hard to gauge a season by one episode.

I hope they will show more depth and give deeper look into this tragedy and the connection between Batwoman and the villain throughout the season like they did with Jessica Jones. I’m hoping it will be a bit darker as we go as well just because it needs to be to really fit in place with all of the Batman and Joker movies/tv/comics.

What do you think?
