This review is for those who haven’t read the manga, so we approach it as first time viewers.
We’ll try to be as spoiler free as possible. Proceed with caution!
We open on the aftermath of the horror inducing puke kiss in the previous episode, with a very drunk Denji being carried home by Himeno, Aki’s mentor. It’s a nice, gentle series of scenes and dialog exchanges where we learn a little more about Himeno and her romantic intentions towards a fellow team mate. Possibly an alcoholic, her heart is set on something just out of reach – much like Denji. Apparently he’s not the only one with “goals”. The next morning over food, they form a friendly alliance to help each other reach their individual romantic aspirations by working together.
It’s sweet, but unfortunately short lived.
The series continues to wow, and the last few minutes of “Gun” brings pain as the team is attacked by new foes. Denji has dealt with devils, no problem. The team has had a history of loss, so there’s nothing new there. But in this episode, there is such a gut punch of loss on multiple fronts that you can’t help but feel it. Sacrifices are made, and some journeys come to an end. Or so it seems. Things can change, as we are constantly learning about rules in this world. But this feels permanant.
All we’re left with is that love wins the day, even if the price is high. Quite a poignant moment from something as weird as a man who turns into a chainsaw, whose sole motivation is physical touch and acceptance. And food.
So far this is my favorite episode, though it is quite sobering in its conclusion…
Some minor spoilers in the end title credits, featuring a song by TK from Ling tosite sigure. Proceed with caution!
