This week’s Geek’d Cosplay Spotlight falls on Foxxikitten! We first saw her at a comic con as Lana from ‘Archer’, along with a few other friends and family rounding out the cast. Truly great work, completely hilarious in all the right ways. From there, we’ve seen her pop up as a ton of awesome characters and so we had to know what drives her cosplay compulsion. Read on to learn more about the uber talented Foxxikitten and her incredible cosplay creations!
Name:
Kit Compton, aka Foxxikitten Cosplay
Favorite genre/characters/mythos?
In general: Sci-Fi, Fantasy, #comic books. I love Star Wars, the Harry Potter series, DC and #Marvel characters (especially the villains), and all things 80s – the action cartoons (like Thundercats and GI Joe), the fantasy and sci-fi movies (such as Labyrinth and Blade Runner), and the really cheesy comedies.
How did you get started?
I’ve always loved dressing up in costumes since I was a kid and have been sewing since I was 14. I did some historical costuming with the SCA in the early 90s, but I didn’t really get into cosplay as a full-time hobby until 2011. I stumbled upon a local Steampunk convention (now defunct) and thought it sounded like a fun thing to attend. I met a bunch of great people there (including my husband) and realized there were other people out there who had the same interests as I do! Since then, I have had the privilege of becoming part of several charity cosplay groups, which lets me do something I love and bring joy to kids at the same time.
Who or what is your inspiration?
All my friends who cosplay inspire me to keep improving my skills, because they all have unique talents, techniques, and visions that keep me wanting to learn new things. Some of my favorite cosplayers that I’m inspired by are Knightmage, Megan Mattingly, and Dominique Skye, not just for their amazing costuming skills, but by their great personalities and commitment to charity work and encouraging others to cosplay, regardless of skill level or body type.
Favorite materials or techniques?
I don’t know if I’d call it my “favorite”, but I have gotten quite adept at working with spandex and other stretch fabrics after making literally dozens of leotards and bodysuits for various characters, lol. I also enjoy working with foam, worbla and other thermoplastics, and my airbrush to create props, accessories, and body paint techniques.
Favorite resource you use for learning?
Online tutorials! I actually find a lot of these on Pinterest, believe it or not, because there are lots of boards dedicated to links of cosplay construction tutorials from all over the web, so I don’t have to go searching dozens of different places to find them. I also have a great network of friends I can ask for pointers or tips on just about anything if I need some in-person assistance.
Any tips for beginners?
Don’t get discouraged if your first tries don’t come out the way you wanted! Even if you’ve been doing something for years, there’s still always something new to learn. When I look at my first cosplays from five years ago and compare them to my current skill level, I am amazed at how much I’ve improved – but I know that there’s still more room for me to hone my skills further, and I see it as a fun challenge to master something and then build on that to continue to improve.
