Geek’d Boldly Reviews Star Trek: BEYOND!

Having loved the reboot of Star Trek with 4 theatrical viewings, we were not big fans of the follow up sequel with Cumberbatch/Kahn. So, Thursday night, we were hoping for the best. With director Justin Lin, of ‘Fast and the Furious 3-6’ fame, what new life and thrill would be brought to the ‘Trek universe? Well, not that much has changed. In fact, we feel like this is closer in spirit to an episode of the original series. Full of action, destruction and spectacle, the crew we love is still going strong. Bones and Spock have extended scenes together, and their witty repartee is in fine form. We could watch Kirk, Spock and Bones sitting at a bar just chatting and be thrilled. The chemistry is magnificent.

Idris Elba portrays ‘Krall’, the big baddie. One of our favorite actors, we feel his role is a bit diminished and his story arc poorly handled. Overall, the story is a bit weak. As in, heartfelt. Emotional. There is so much to mourn with the passing of Nimoy that you would think this play a more central role in tone and story. But not really. It’s in there, just not as significant as this fan would have wanted it.

We still love the 2009 reboot as a fresh and exciting chapter in the story, and would gladly say that this is the closest to that of the current trilogy. We’ll see this in the theater again, of course, and eagerly await the return of the crew for the fourth installment. Apparently, Chris Hemsworth is supposed to be making an appearance, but that’s a different story…

What do you think?
