GEEK’D Gives NEXT GEN Dual Reviews!

The Tale of Two Reviews

Although it shares many attributes with ‘Big Hero 6’ and ‘Iron Giant’, ‘Next Gen’ tries to be its own brand of inspiring movie. The cast includes many actors that you know such as; John Krasinski, Jason Sudeikis, and David Cross. It tells a story of a young teenage girl who is angry at the world, and how she oddly finds herself rescued from her own dark cloud by the technology she so passionately hates. It also cautions us to not become overrun by the technology we use daily. Geek’d contributors Maria and Rachel approached reviewing the movie from distinctly different perspectives, but as you’ll see ‘Next Gen’ delivered similar results nonetheless.

Maria’s “Next Gen” Review

The heroin’s origin story leaves me feeling unfulflled as it leaves a few questions to be answered. The villain’s backstory feels under developed as if it was an after thought. The movie too strongly harkens to Big Hero 6 as well as The Iron Giant for it to feel incredibly creative.

Contrarily, Next Gen is a children’s movie and in that respect, it has a playful dialogue and a lot of fun fighting scenes that I know my niece would enjoy. This adventure of a young girl’s self discovery of friendship, forgiveness, and sacrifice could be insightful for young girls and boys.

Overall the movie feels a little undeveloped and a little too similar to the, what I feel, are two classic animated movies.

Final Grade: C+

Rachel’s “Next Gen” Review

In the beginning our young teenager hates the robot population whose main goal seems to be to ruin her life. Later in the movie she is ‘befriended’ by one of these robots that she hates, however when they meet again later she finds use of him for her own agenda.

Giving up what set the robot apart from the others, it and our young heroine find themselves having to work together one last time to save those important to them. Even though this movie is similar to ones from the past, it is for sure its own movie, and NOT a Disney movie by any means.

Pros of the movie is that it has a strong story line for the most part, along with casted by well-known actors. It has the right amount of humor in it, giving you a good laugh for the day.

Cons to this movie are that the mother in it lacked any “motherly instinct”. It also shared a lot of key scenes of Big Hero 6 and the Iron Giant.

Final Grade: B-

There you have it folks, two opinions on Netflix’s attempt at playing Disney. Did they succeed? Watch it and make that decision for yourself. As far as we’re concerned, if you want all the feels of the classics, just stick with the classics. Not hating on Netflix. But with that much clout why not invest in something less derivative!? Until next time, keep it Geek’d.
