The Fantastic Four is a tricky property. To be faithful to the original tone, how do you bring old school storytelling to this jaded era of superhero bleakness? Their family dynamic, innocence and hopeful vibe is a direct representation of the era of their creation. Could it translate?
Alex Ross answers that question beautifully. Ross, who is an amazing artist (and only gets better with each and every piece he creates) absolutely shines here as not only the illustrator but also as the writer. This special edition feels like a direct connection to the heart and soul of Marvel’s first family’s original run, and doesn’t miss a step. It’s a roller coaster of visuals and narrative – and I think that Kirby and Lee would be proud to see the book in this form. The character art is the perfect reimagining of the originals, but doesn’t sacrifice any of Ross’ signature style along the way. The story is charming, without being cheesy or come off feeling like some kind of ‘retro’ wannabe. If you’re looking for true Fantastic Four without the usual Marvel fluff and politics, then you’re going to love this new classic. Recommended reading.
