We were lucky to have early access to the movie with Cinemark’s advanced preview screening, and have since been wrestling with the review. Did we like the movie? Absolutely. Will everyone? Probably not. The bright colors and character design says “fun, playful childrens movie!”, but the story line is better suited to an audience of 18+. We could see how young girls around the ages of 9-15 who may be going through the types of issues that the title character experiences could relate. However, the movie plays off of an older viewer’s past life experiences to make its story and jokes come to life. Younger children may not have enough of those experiences to fully enjoy the movie and come away disappointed since it’s not nearly the film adventure of “Toy Story”, “Cars” or “Up”.
In short:
Great Movie. Not for young children.
Highly recommended, but for the right audience. In hindsight, I think we were more disappointed with how the movie was marketed rather than the actual movie itself, and we hope that doesn’t end up hurting this film at the box office.
