Geek’d Reviews Spider-Man: Homecoming!

Yes, true believers. What we have here is the perfect hybridization of movie and comic book, plus some unique studio integration between and Sony. The result? The Spider-Man you’ve been waiting for that fits in perfectly with the Avengers universe, as well as stands alone inside of his own. The people involved in making this flick should be proud of the monumental achievement that this movie represents. It should have failed. It should have sucked. And, boy, it did not.

Now, this isn’t the melodrama you’ve seen before in previous Sony versions. Instead, this Peter Parker is a KID. He’s young, energetic, ready to please and perfectly cast. There’s a brightness and cheerfulness to the overall pic. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and doesn’t weigh itself down with the constant self-doubting ‘am I doing the right thing?’ kind of hero mentality. The world he’s fighting to protect is only a few square miles wide, and the repercussions are far from anything the Avengers are currently dealing with. Instead, he’s the ‘friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man’, as stated in comics, and nothing more. Which is a refreshing change from the constant ‘end of the world’ superhero scenarios going around these days. Worried about superhero burnout on the big screen? More movies like this one will keep that from occurring.

So, bottom line, is the movie worth your time? Yes! Is it perfect? Of course not! But it definitely deserves at least 2 watches before settling into a BluRay favorite on the shelf. The casting is spot on, and the ‘creative license’ taken with the characters fits in this Spidey universe. Can’t go into too many details here, don’t want to ruin any surprises, but the filmmakers have crafted in some great little shocks that will pop in on you, and to great effect.

Tom Holland is Spider-Man, and this writer is definitely a fan. If you liked his portrayal in ‘Civil-War’ then be prepared to enjoy this latest film for what it is: a long overdue fresh start with Marvel’s input.
