We’ve waited 14 years for this sequel. That’s a lot of time for expectations to grow out of control, so large in fact that any superhero team might wither in facing them. The Parr family would be the exception. They face it head on, and do what families do best: rely on each other and work together to overcome any challenge. While the movie doesn’t break new ground, it certainly falls in line with the tone and fun of the first. All the characters are back, some new supers are introduced as well as enemies and allies. But at its core ‘The Incredibles’ is about family, and #Incredibles 2 hasn’t forgotten that.
Brad Byrd’s vision for this world is as sharp as ever, and though the movie seemed a bit long between the second and third act, it’s an enjoyable ride. If you want to make sequel comparisons, I’d say that Toy Story 2 and 3 pack more emotional punch and gravitas, the gold standards of story continuation. ‘The Incredibles 2’ however delivers more laughs than its predecessor. Plus, the story takes some turns that hopefully will let Byrd expand this world even further.
‘The Incredibles 2’ is highly enjoyable and worth the watch, easily recommended as geek-worthy time well spent.
