Geek’d reviews: Werewolf by Night

So, I canceled Disney+ a while back due to the significant damage they’ve done to the Star Wars franchise. My opinion, sure. But it’s a fact.

So imagine my utter despair when hearing that they were launching a ‘Werewolf by Night’ Halloween special. This comic was one of my favorites growing up, picking up issues at flea markets and thrift stores whenever I could find them. I was thrilled that the evil Disney overlords were going to actually take a risk on something like WWBN, but then reality started to drift in. This is Disney. They don’t do horror. They’re going to re-imagine it. They were going to make it suck. To make it worse, I started seeing the leaks…

It was going to be black and white.

It was going to be set in a noir style.

A composer was going to direct. A composer. What?!?

The world could use some new werewolf tales and THIS is the best Disney could do?

I had to see this, even if it was bad. So, I restarted the subscription for ONE MONTH ONLY, I told myself.

And… um, yeah, it was good. Amazingly good.

Charming. Charming sums it up. I’m sorry I judged you prematurely, composer guy. You nailed it. Every choice you made, from music to setting to casting was just a joy to behold. And I was going to be the hardest to convince that it was good. It was better than good. It was fantastic.

If you’re looking for a little gore, some action and a lot of endearing heart – then this geek highly recommends Werewolf by Night. The only thing Disney got wrong, in my opinion, is that it wasn’t longer! Who knew? Praise where praise is due – Disney nailed it. ( Still have my subscription. For now.)

Composer guy = Michael Giacchino. He rocks.

What do you think?
