Geek’d visits Fan Expo Dallas!

Comic Cons, once a hard to find outlet for all things geek, seem to be an almost weekly occurrence. And with so many popping up locally as well as regionally, it’s important to know which one is worth your hard earned buck. Let’s face it, dropping $30 for a 1 day ticket isn’t so easy, especially if you want to spend a little on the inside of the event too. Throw in the autographs, collectibles, toys and artist sketches and you’ve spent a small fortune before you know it. And concessions? Holy crow. Just take out the credit plan on the popcorn and you’ll have it paid off in 3 easy payments of $19.99…

So why should you care about the FED? Never having been to a con in this area, we’ve been impressed not only by the size but by the programming and celebrity access. San Diego is really the gold standard of cons, but we think this one rivals it in sheer physical size. Another year or two and this could easily be the SXSW equivalent of comic conventions with the addition of some larger studio involvement. And that is a damn good thing. San Diego is near-impossible to gain access to, even if you could afford the flight, hotel or time to travel. With this kind of convention so close to the middle-America fan base, we’re hoping that the entertainment industry takes note and considers more direct involvement. Fans want to see screeners, trailers, con exclusives and get the scoop on what’s coming our way without the limitations of geography. Bring it Hollywood, we want it!

So, what does this year’s FED have to offer?

Over 30 celebrity guests, including THE William Shatner. George Takei. Nichelle Nichols. Haley Atwell. John Cusak. Over 40 comic artists and creators, including comic royalty Stan Lee, Todd McFarlane and Frank Miller. Voice talent like Kevin Conroy as well as Steve Blum. There’s just too much to list, but visit the FED site at fanexpodallas.com to see all the great stuff available.

Couldn’t make it this year? No problem. Stay tuned over the weekend to our social media as we broadcast live video and upload all of the cosplay pics you can stand. We’ll shop the booths, so even if you couldn’t make it you’ll at least get a taste of what’s available. Plus, many of these guys sell online, so you’re never very far from your next collectible. We’ll try to post as many urls as we can.

On a final note, people in Dallas drive crazy fast. And don’t use blinkers. So wish us luck as we make our way to one of the more fun cons we’ve been to. Hopefully next year we’ll see you there too.
