James Gunn continues to be the forerunner in good ideas, executed well. Forget the Grinch. Forget Jimmy Stewart. Forget Ralphie. Our new geek Christmas tradition around here will be watching James Gunn’s Guardians Holiday Special. Clocking in at under 50 minutes, the show is lean and gets right to the point. We pick up on the team after the events of “Endgame” as they settle into their new home and deal with the absence of their friend Gamora.
The story centers around Peter’s love of Christmas, and how it was ruined for him as a child by Yondu. His team decides to give him the best Christmas ever to counter his sadness for Gamora, even though they have no idea what Christmas is, and do their best to make Peter happy.
Leading the charge is Mantis, and Pom Klemmentieff does a wonderful job carrying most of the story throughout. Aided by Drax, they embark on a quick trip to Earth to find Peter just the right gift. Hilarity ensues. It’s a fish out of water story, full of heart and property damage.
Fun for all ages, the GOTG HS is a story of giving, friendship and family. Sometimes it is the thought that counts, but the effort made is what really sets it apart.
Geek’d recommends watching it twice, there are lots of Easter eggs sprinkled throughout…
