Horror Coming to ‘Star Wars’ Comic Storyline

If Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘s embrace of war movie tropes felt like a change of the Star Wars franchise, prepare for something even more dramatic in the pages of Entertainment’s Star Wars : a gothic storyline that will run between the main series and the recently launched Star Wars: Doctor Aphra title.

The five-part Star Wars: Screaming Citadel — announced via the official Star Wars website Wednesday — will be co-written by Star Wars writer Jason Aaron and Doctor Aphra‘s Kieron Gillen, and run across two issues of each series after launching in a one-off Star Wars: Screaming Citadel special issue.

“We’re going to lean very much to this particular genre that we haven’t seen in Star Wars before, and that’s a big part of the appeal,” Gillen told StarWars.com. ” It’s instantly a Star Wars take on the trope of doing a village, and there’s a really weird castle up on the hill and it’s a bit suspicious, and they arrive there and [the people] seem very friendly but something is definitely off.” The setting for the storyline, he went on to explain, has “that dark-and-stormy night of gothic horror, but it’s got an industrial, kind of lived-in feel to it.” The Hammer House of Mos Eisley, anyone…?

“To me, it was kind of surprising just how easily that all fit together and just how well it worked to take these Star Wars characters and plop ’em in this kind of setting which we haven’t seen them in before,” said Aaron. “I think it worked right off the bat. Something felt right about it, and I think that only builds and builds as the story goes along.”

Screaming Citadel will be the second crossover between Marvel’s Star Wars titles, after 2015’s Star Wars: Vader Down, also co-written by Aaron and Gillen. The storyline begins in May with Star Wars: Screaming Citadel No. 1, before continuing in Star Wars Nos. 31 and 32, and Doctor Aphra Nos. 7 and 8.
