Review: Go See ‘Suicide Squad’!

We’ll keep this short. Go see this movie. Is it perfect? No. Is it good? Yes. Absolutely, yes. It is completely worth your time and money. It’s not manic, or over the top as I feared. It happens to be a well acted, enjoyable part of the DCU full of heart and action, grounded in a kind of reality not reserved for the comic film fare. It’s gritty and dirty, messy and chaotic. The characters are true to form, and their new big screen iterations are what the fans deserve.

For more spoiler free details, read below. Otherwise, go see this movie.

After the poo-storm of ‘Rotten Tomato’ reviews, I was a bit worried that we’d have another DOA film from the DCU. I am not a fan of BvS, so take that as you will. Instead, from the opening logo reveals, I was mesmerized. The film is cut in a very choppy way, a bit abrupt for my taste. But the characters are introduced in interesting ways and at a rapid pace. Plus there are tie-ins to other parts of the DCU shown. All of it, well done. The biggest question I wanted answered was Jared Leto as the new Joker, making his new big screen debut. Leto brings it, and absolutely gives us a new version of the clown prince of crime to love and fear. And I do mean fear. This one is a total killer, not hiding in the murky ‘Dark Knight’ shadows but actually embracing the police helicopter spotlight. Margot Robbie is perfect as Harley Quinn, she couldn’t have done it better. As for the rest of the ‘Squad’, we get all the backstory we need and then we’re off on the mission. I’ll admit the film has a kind of rushed feel, like some of the scenes were shot extended but then cut down to possibly avoid the bloat comparisons of ‘BvS’. But it wasn’t so bad that it affected my movie going experience. Aside from those edits, the only other gripe would be the real bad guys the ‘Squad’ was fighting against. They were too dark to be able to see how much damage they were taking, being black on the outside and inside, and it would have been nice to see some contrasting colors for easier comparison. All in all, DC has found it’s footing again! I encourage you to go see this and make up your own mind. I think the mass media ‘movie critics’ missed the target on this one. David Ayers and company, I hope to see your work again very soon, I’ll be catching this one at the theater at least 2 more times.
