Tartakovsky’s Primal is a great example of storytelling

There is no actual dialogue with the exemption of the exacional scream to convey the extreme feelings that are shown. Emotions are conveyed with facial expressions and body language and even the color palette is chosen very careful to set the mode of the scenery and the upcoming challenge the caveman protagonist faces.
The first episode paints an excellent scene for natural emotions we feel on a daily basis, by having the caveman returns to his family after a hunt to see that  his family has been eaten by bright red carnivorous dinosaurs. This choice of a classic tragedy is very common but combined with no dialogue from the protagonist put more influences on the art and animation which is unique in its own way and hopefully continues with this motif.

Gritting his teeth and lowering his brow he fights off the beast to get to his family with extreme movements of jumping and swing off branch screaming the entire exerting a menacing howl of anger to intimidate the beasts then turns to see him raise his eyes and lower his lips is an expression of concern.

He slowly walks into the cave scared of what is missing from his home. He places his hand on the wall next to a cave painting of what is clearly him, his wife, and two children then cuts to a close up of his face with him wide eyed that quickly closes tightly shut and back to the cave drawing for him to wipe away his wife and children smudging their paintings to signify  that they are dead. This is followed by him climbing a snowy blue mountain to an extremely high ledge and standing next to the cliff side dangling his toes off overcome with grief he is prepared to take his life only to step back fall to his knees and cover his face and remains still until he looks up to the rising suns bright warm glowing colors. Staring at the embracing light he sees his family waving at him to tell him to move on. The stage of grief is very touching showing that even something as dangerous is still human it’s an amazing way to having a touching moment.

His hope filled eyes are slowly lowered signify his desire to avenge his family. He travels the thick green jungle in search of the dangerous beasts that took his family to find a green dinosaur mothering to you dinos that are quickly attacked by the bright beasts that lurk in the jungle looking for easy prey. The cave man sees this and having his family taken from him he jumps in and attacks the dino monsters in an attempt to protect the young family of hatchlings. Sadly the small newly hatched dinos are eaten and the green mothers pupils are quickly changed from wide ovals to sharp slants and primal instinct takes over and she acts quickly attacking the beast that ate her children with the assistance of the caveman and manage to kill the monstrous beast. The two look at each other locking eyes share a common grief of a family lost. The caveman walks away from the mother to give her time to process the tragedy that she as just faced. He walks to the ocean and travel alongside the beach turns around and sees that the mother dinosaure has chosen to follow him he turns around with his back facing the camera at a low angle revealing a landscape covered by the sun embrace to tell his newly accompanying partner that they are going on a great journey. The first episode telles a tragic story that we have seen several times but this unique way off having to protagonist that are natural enemy communicate without actually speaking is entertaining and interesting and I hope that it will continue this story with the two traveling along side facing more dangerous challenges and overcoming them together.
